According to Carolyn E. Booth RN, Assistant Professor, Department of HHPRParamedic Program, Central Washington University, water exercise "may contribute a positive benefit on balance and gait for women 65 years and older", and the benefit is no different from what one achieves doing land-based exercises. And because of that, water-based exercises "could be considered as an alternate exercise activity for seniors, especially if land-based exercise is difficult due to chronic musculoskeletal disorders".

While Australia did recently sign the Kyoto protocol, it still won’t halt the global warming phenomenon that’s currently bearing down on us, at least not that soon. Instead of cooking in the sweltering heat, why not jump into the pool to cool off? Exercising in the water has proven to be “less stressful on the joints and provides the same benefits as any other form of exercise”, and “reduces the risk of heart disease and strokes, improve muscle strength and balance, helps with weight control, diabetes and high blood pressure”. You should also try out AquaJogger to augment your exercise experience.

Mention aerobics and we tend to think of those high impact fitness programmes they air in the middle of the afternoon, not the sort of thing you’d want to engage yourself in if you’re pregnant. However, The New York Times reports that “exercise during pregnancy may help women reduce the need for anesthesia when they give birth”. Of course, we’re not recommending any sort of impact sport or activity that would risk a miscarriage. Instead, why not give water aerobics, which has proven to be effective and safe for pregnant women, a shot? The AquaJogger facilitates this purpose perfectly and is suitable for all age groups.

Recently I was down at my local pool swimming a couple of lazy laps when I almost swam into the back of two senior citzs, in the 'slow lane.' To my great delight these two ladies were swimming along in their Aquajogger belts. Apparently the ladies found pool fitness good for their aches and pains which were exacerbated by walking, and other varied exercises. As active septogenarians these ladies were full of praise for their floatation belts. It seems Aquajogger is a tremendous way for people to ensure exercise remains an important factor in their lives.

Proper breathing technique is extremely important during training. Breathing supplies oxygen to the muscle cells, which is essential for muscle contraction, and helps deliver energy and build the muscle. Make sure to exhale when you lift any weight and inhale when you lower it. The same techniques apply to aqua aerobics and other water based fitness programs. Poor breathing techniques can lead, very quickly to fatigue, and the build up of toxins in your muscles will lead to a greater incidence of cramping.

Depending on your age, level of conditioning, and your fitness goals, you should train in a particular heart-rate zone. Beginners should try to elevate their heart rate to 50%-60% of their maximum while intermediates and advanced should shoot for 70%-85% of their max. The higher your heart rate, the more calories you will burn and the more fit you can become. To figure your maximum heart rate, simply subtract your age from 220. For example, if you\'re 30 years old, you would have a maximum heart rate of 190. To work at 70% of your maximum heart rate, you would shoot for a heart rate of approximately 133 beats per minute (0.7 x 190). You can also count bpm (beats per minute) in 10-second increments and then multiply by six.

This means that the human body must expend the a far greater amount of energy completing a movement under water than it would in normal air. 30 minutes of aqua aerobics with AquaJogger will burn about 300 calories. The health benefits and a full list of very affordable AquaJogger buoyancy belts and aqua aerobic products can be found and purchased on this site.

Past research into Deep Water Running (DWR) has found it to improve aerobic capacity. It was found that when compared to compeditive land running, DWR led to a reduced incidence of musculoskeletal injury. It is of course the cushioning effect of water, which is 400 times more dense than air, that drastically reduces the impact of foot on ground and the resulting shockwave that reverberates throughout the body.

In an aqua exercise review, L.Kravitz Ph.D and J.J Mayo Ph.D found that "The buoyant force of water results in up to a 90% reduction in body weight in the water. Because of the cushioning effect of water, individuals potentially at risk to bodily stress from weight-bearing exercise, such as the elderly, obese, individuals with a soft tissue injury, or those with an orthopedic disorder, may find water to be the most desirable environment for exercise."
